Abstract

Aeration is one of the fundamental unit processes used in groundwater iron and manganese removal systems, particularly in small and medium-sized water treatment plants (WTPs). This study presents the importance of selecting an appropriate aeration method for achieving required water quality parameters and highlights the role of pilot studies in the design process. It was demonstrated that the application of a cascade aerator with a reaction tank ensures effective oxygenation, hydrogen sulfide removal, partial CO₂ stripping, and improved oxidation of Fe(II). Pilot studies enabled the determination of optimal contact time and system configuration. The results confirm that a properly designed aeration process is essential for stable and efficient operation of water treatment systems.
